    <body>I have the same problem.

Good video quality, no audio on Ubuntu 9.04.

I am using ALSA, and I believe there must be some kind of conflict between the audio engine and Livestation.

It's a problem I have on other applications, like Skype for example, therefore I think it may be due to the fact that these programs are not compatible with the recent versions of Ubuntu, that do not give full access to these applications for security reasons.

I may be wrong, but if someone has more insight, it would be good to know.</body>

<body>I had 2.7 working OK on Ubuntu 9.04. Sound is a general pain in Linux from my experience such that I needed to shut down any application that may use sound before starting Livestation. In most cases this was Firefox that had at some point in the session loaded a flash object with sound like YouTube. I then upgraded to the 2.8 version to try Al Jazeera HQ, but this appears to have a bug on my Atom based netbook where the picture lags the sound by a few seconds which makes it unwatchable. Not sure what to make of this as the 2.8 Livestation client works fine under Windows XP on the same Atom notebook and fine under Ubuntu 9.04 on a Turion64x2 notebook. Figure that out??? In any case I have found that the web based flash player under Windows XP works the best of them all. Would love to be able to use it under Linux, but Flash is an absolute disaster in Linux, especially on a resource constrained Atom netbook.

Regards,
Rex</body>

    <body>Hello

If you want sound to work nicely on Ubuntu I suggest using Pulse Audio. This allows all the applications to share the sound card.
Here is how I have my Ubuntu configured for sound with an onboard soundcard and a USB heaset.

Using ALSA

The appropriate ~/.openalrc should look like this for using the default ALSA device which can be configured in ~/.asoundrc

(define devices '(alsa))
(define alsa-device &quot;default&quot;)

If you want to use a different ALSA device than the default use aplay -L to dump the available devices. For example my computer
has a USB headset and a 7.1 surround onboard soundcard

ashley@ashley-desktop:~$ aplay -L
front:CARD=Intel,DEV=0
    HDA Intel, AD198x Analog
    Front speakers
surround40:CARD=Intel,DEV=0
    HDA Intel, AD198x Analog
4.0 Surround output to Front and Rear speakers
surround41:CARD=Intel,DEV=0
    HDA Intel, AD198x Analog
4.1 Surround output to Front, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround50:CARD=Intel,DEV=0
    HDA Intel, AD198x Analog
5.0 Surround output to Front, Center and Rear speakers
surround51:CARD=Intel,DEV=0
    HDA Intel, AD198x Analog
5.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround71:CARD=Intel,DEV=0
    HDA Intel, AD198x Analog
7.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Side, Rear and Woofer speakers
iec958:CARD=Intel,DEV=0
    HDA Intel, AD198x Digital
    IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output
hdmi:CARD=Intel,DEV=0
    HDA Intel
    HDMI Audio Output
null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)
front:CARD=default,DEV=0
Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000 , USB Audio
    Front speakers
surround40:CARD=default,DEV=0
Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000 , USB Audio
4.0 Surround output to Front and Rear speakers
surround41:CARD=default,DEV=0
Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000 , USB Audio
4.1 Surround output to Front, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround50:CARD=default,DEV=0
Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000 , USB Audio
5.0 Surround output to Front, Center and Rear speakers
surround51:CARD=default,DEV=0
Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000 , USB Audio
5.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround71:CARD=default,DEV=0
Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000 , USB Audio
7.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Side, Rear and Woofer speakers
iec958:CARD=default,DEV=0
Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000 , USB Audio
    IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output

If you want openal to use the USB headset you would specify it as shown below

(define alsa-device &quot;front:default,0&quot;)

Alternatively if you wanted it to use the digital out on the onboard card

(define alsa-device &quot;iec958:Intel,0&quot;)

So the config for using my onboard digital out is show below

(define devices '(alsa))
(define alsa-device &quot;iec958:Intel,0&quot;)

Livestation should now play audio out of the correct device as long as that device is not being used by another program.

Using ALSA and Pulse Audio

ALSA seems to work on nearly all Linux machines however it cannot share the device between mutliple programs which is really annoying
So you only get audio in the first program that grabs the sound device. If you install pulse audio it will allow all your programs to play audio at the same time.

You should install the following packages

pulseaudio
padevchooser
paman
paprefs
pavucontrol
pavumeter
alsa-plugins

Once you have installed pulse audio there are a few configuration changes required to get everything working perfectly.
First of all you need to make pulseaudio the default device for ALSA applications by setting it in ~/.asoundrc

My file looks like this

pcm.!default
{
    type pulse
}

ctl.!default
{
    type pulse
}

Also put your ~/.openalrc file back to the default device

(define devices '(alsa))
(define alsa-device &quot;default&quot;)

In the System Preferences-&gt;Sound choose Pulse Audio Server as the default device for everything

Start the Pulse Audio Device Chooser by typing padevchooser in the console. You will get an icon in the notification area. Click on the icon and choose Manager
Choose the Device tab you can see the sources and sinks available on your machine. Sinks are playback devices and sources are recording devices. The clients tab will show you which programs are playing audio currently and what plugin they are using to do it. Close the Manager and click on the icon again and choose Volume Control. Here you can control the volume and see what programs are playing or recording. You can also switch which audio device the program is playing on.

http://www.pulseaudio.org/wiki/PerfectSetup

There are some little fixes required to make Firefox work etc. My system has everythign working including Skype which now supports Pulse Audio properly.</body>
